Medical Benefits Of Cactus

As a traditional herbal medicine in all around the world, ancient people always used it to heal burn wounds because it is believed that the plant can prevent infection and irritation. Moreover, cactus can also be mixed with certain types of tea leaves to facilitate the births of babies. In Mexico, it is widely used in the treatment of diabetes, asthma and home remedies for gonorrhea. Today, cactus is also widely used as an additive to food industry for making jellies, tea, juice and various alcoholic beverages. In addition, as an important ingredient in traditional herbal medicine, cactus is very effective in treating burns, diabetes and dyspepsia.

In all parts of the cactus plants, its flowers contain most of the medicinal ingredient such as quercetin, rutin, β-sitosterol, Luteolin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, beta-glucosidase acid, etc. Its skin also contains a variety of minerals including iron, calcium, magnesium and selenium. On the other hand, its pulp contains many antioxidants including some types of flavonoids and carotenoids.

Cactus has been used by people for medical purposes for thousands of years. Korea people used to use it to relieve a number of disorders such as indigestion, stomach pain, asthma, type 2 diabetes and burns. The usually way to consume cactus is via oral intake, but it is also available for external usages to treat burns. In some countries, the roots of this plant can also be used to deal with wound disinfection, joint pain and treatment of pertussis. Many scientific studies also found that cactus contains some polysaccharide components which can help diabetics patients to control their blood sugar levels.

The roots of cactus are also confirmed to have some anti-inflammatory effects. This is because of the beta-sitosterol contained in its roots can effectively eliminate inflammation for human body. Also, the phospholipid in this plant can be helpful to lower the risk of getting ulcer. Moreover, many medical researches also confirmed that the polysaccharide components contained in this plant can accelerate the process of wound healing. This is the reason why this herbal medicine has been used in the treatment of wounds and burns for hundreds of years.
