Betel nuts are one of the most addictive food in the world, and a long-term consumption will bring negative side effects for the health. In many parts of the world many people have the habit of chewing betel nuts for a refresh feeling. This is especially common in many countries in Asia and the South Pacific regions, and people chewing betel nuts can be seen everywhere on the street and restaurants. This is because it can cause addition on people which is similar to cocoa and tobacco, and many people use it as a feeling stimulant and appetite suppressants. However, a long time of consumption will enhance the risk of getting many diseases including various types of cancer.

Eating betel products can produce short-term side effects right after the consumption. It can cause abnormal blood sugar level changes and make people start sweating. There are other short-term effects which can last for a few days including walking difficulties, panic attacks and forgetfulness. In addition, the teeth and gum will turn into orange after a few days, and consumption of excessive betel nuts will increase the risk of developing oral cancer. Scientific study also found that it may cause esophageal cancer and can greatly enhance the risk of getting a variety of gum disease.

Betel nut juice swallowed into the body may cause some bad feelings on the stomach including diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. in addition, visceral tumors, liver cancer, kidney damage and gallstones are other long-term negative effects of over consumption of betel nuts. Elevated blood glucose levels can lead to type 2 diabetes, and it is also found to be related with other diseases such as epileptic seizures. Moreover, the rapid heartbeat cause by chewing betel nuts can also cause heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases.
