Side Effects of Tomatoes


The nutritional value of tomatoes has already been known by most people. However, when taking tomatoes you still need to pay attention to some side effects about this vegetable as the following.

First, tomatoes should not be eaten in raw especially for people having stomach related diseases. They should only be consumed in raw as a fruit in hot summer and as a source of vitamin c. Also, they should not be eaten when your stomach is empty. This is because they will increase the secretion of gastric acid in stomach. Moreover, tomatoes contain some chemical substances which will be easily combined with stomach acid to form insoluble lumps. They will easily cause abdominal pain, stomach discomfort, stomach engorgement and other similar disorders.


You should always avoid eating unripened green tomatoes due to the presence of poisonous nightshade alkali. Consumption of immature green tomatoes may result in dizziness, nausea, aches, vomiting and symptoms. Also, a long cooking time will result in the loss of nutrients as well.

For pregnant women, some extra attention need to be made. When choosing tomatoes in the market, avoid picking up tomatoes with big clumps because they can be considered as a tumor of the vegetable. Secondly, unripened green tomatoes should be totally avoided since they contain a lot of toxic tomatine which may affect the development of the fetus and cause a variety of disorders including nausea, vomiting, fatigue and other symptoms of poisoning.
